Frequently Asked Questions Concerning Consumers
|
- Does etching the skin of the fruit reduce shelf life?
Not at all. In experiments conducted at numerous packing houses, using dozens of types of produce, the Natural Light Labeling System has been proven not to reduce shelf life at all.
- How does it work?
The Natural Light Labeling System concentrates a beam of light, much like a magnifying glass concentrates the sun’s rays. However, since our machine uses laser technology, the concentrated light is much more precisely controlled, as it is in eye surgery. A narrow layer of pigment is removed from the outer skin, revealing the layer underneath, usually white in color. Since this white color normally contrasts well with the outer skin color, a legible label is created.
- Will I pay more for etched fruit?
Obviously, that will depend upon the retailer. However, use of the Natural Light Labeling System currently represents a cost savings to most packers.
- Does the use of this machine mean my produce will be irradiated?
No. Irradiation is a process used to kill bacteria and other microbes that can be found on some food products. It uses flashes of charged radioactive substances or electron streams or x-rays. The Natural Light Labeling System does none of that. It uses light, and is much more similar to concentrated light from a magnifying glass than it is to any form of irradiation. Neither process leaves a residue or radioactivity behind.
- What about genetic modification?
Genetic modification is a process whereby genes from one living thing are placed in the cells of another. This is done to make the plant more disease resistant or give it a longer shelf life, for instance. The Natural Light Labeling System is incapable of genetically modifying food or anything else. The PLU of a genetically modified piece of produce has an “8” in front of it. The Natural Light Labeling System places a permanent, edible label on the fruit or vegetable, so you always know if it is genetically modified or not.
